Caynham Forge (East Barn) is ideal for Ludlow a couple of miles out in a beautiful part of the countryside. There is a short drive ending in a parking area and the Front door is close by. It sleeps a maximum of 6.
You enter into a beautiful semi-open plan kitchen diner. To the right is the high specification kitchen laid out with great care and attention to detail. Windows look over fields and countryside. Ahead are the oak stairs specially made for the cottage and, to the left, is a well planned and convivial dining area. Standing here you can see through to the lounge with a wood burner.
Off the lounge is the snug, Bedroom 1, that can be used as an extra bedroom if six people wish to stay. Fittings are high quality throughout and there has, clearly, been a huge amount of thought put into the conversion and creation of this lovely cottage.
Returning to the dining room, on the sharp left is a downstairs toilet before you get back to the stairs opposite the front door. On the first floor can be found two delicious en-suite bedrooms. Bedroom 2 is a king size and Bedroom 3 has twin beds that can be made up as a superking. Again, it is obvious that the owners have put in some serious thought into creating one of the highest quality cottages. The 'Rooms and Beds' option on the menu displays th choice of options.
The house is furnished beautifully in mute but carefully chosen colours and a strong emphasis has been put on comfort and relaxation. A heat pump and underfloor heating ensure warmth in this modern high quality cottage and a private laundry room is a few meters away in a separate building. About Caynham Forge (East Barn)
The cottage is about 3 miles from Ludlow with Clee Hill some miles to the east. The area is spotted with small villages in ancient countryside as the road climbs hundreds of feet from the level of the River Teme and the old rural canal up the hill. Local activity dates back to the iron age or before.
Ludlow has a wide variety of independent shops from butchers to clothes, artisan crafts and high quality food.
It is renowned for its historic significance, once the capital of Wales, it still has the Castle at its centre, a short walk away from the house. The Castle is open most days and has an interesting history, during the Ludlow Festival there are plays put on at the castle, always Shakespeare, thoroughly enjoyable. The town features many medieval buildings which were up-dated in the fashionable way with the addition of Georgian frontages, a wonderful town to wander aimlessly.
Ludlow is associated with excellent food and cultural events throughout the year but particularly the food festivals in May and September. The Ludlow Assembly Rooms has a busy events calendar including films, recitals and plays, a full list is on our Events Calendar.
St Lawrence Church, well worth a visit, has some 15th century ribald carvings as well as remarkable surviving large medieval stained glass windows. It is considered one of the finest of its type in the country.
The South Shropshire Hills is one of the most beautiful areas of the country with some wonderful places to walk or visit. The borders offer choices such as a trip to Hay on Wye, the place for books but well worth a visit in its own right; or you can walk a short part of Offa's Dyke. Locally, of course, Ludlow has food that equals the best in the UK. Some of the farm shops in N Herefordshire and S Shropshire stock produce of a quality that is virtually unknown in urban areas of the UK.
To the South is Hereford city with its Cathedral and its famous Mappa Mundi. Leominster, with its many antique shops is worth a visit, the start of the Black and White village trail is from here.

May 2017 "Re our holiday at Caynham Forge (East Barn) we could write lots but will just say it was the BEST self-catering accommodation we have ever had, in a beautiful setting and two of the nicest owners (Alison and Keith) we have ever dealt with!"
September 2016 "East Barn has been beautifully renovated to a very high standard. It felt like a home for home with all the creature comforts you could wish for. We like staying outside the cities/towns, when holidaying, as we find it more peaceful and relaxing and Caynham didn't disappoint in that respect. However Ludlow is only a few miles away so it's an easy trip into town whenever you need to. Shropshire is a lovely county with lots to see and do. We will definitely stay at East Barn again when we decide to explore some more."
August 2016 "Just to say we had a wonderful stay at East Barn, last week. The barn conversion has been completed imaginatively and to a high standard; it provided excellent accommodation for the five of us. The owners went out of their way to make us feel welcome and there were so many thoughtful little touches that made our stay very comfortable and enjoyable. We have been lucky enough to travel extensively in recent years and have stayed in rented accommodation throughout the world, some wonderful and others much less so! East Barn is one of the very best places we have stayed and we would recommend it without reservation. We hope to return in the new year. Thank you for your help with the booking and for drawing our attention to East Barn through your web-site."
June 2016 "We have nothing but positive feedback about East Barn. I actually tried to leave feedback on trip advisor but it couldn't seem to find 'East Barn'. The cottage was absolutely beautiful. Very well appointed with lots of lovely touches. The owners were extremely helpful. Don't think I've ever slept in a more comfortable bed! You could tell that a lot of thought had gone into the planning and purchasing of fixtures and fittings. Think we'd be hard pressed to find anywhere else that ticked all the boxes."
April 2016 "We have just returned from a wonderful 11 night stay at East Barn. We cannot speak highly enough about this property. It is well situated for visiting this lovely area of Shropshire and Herefordshire.Something for everyone.
It is a fantastic conversion of an old Forge completed to a very high standard. It is warm and cosy at all times. All the fixtures and fittings are top quality, as are the furnishings. Very comfortable beds with lovely crisp white bed linen. The en suite bathroom and shower room are really appreciated, as is the downstairs loo. Every convenience in the kitchen with plenty of crockery, glasses, pots and pans etc, etc. A separate laundry room. A very comfortable spacious lounge with a little snug off it, ideal for when one of us wanted to watch TV and the other wanted to read. For us the main feature of the lounge was the fantastic log fire, so easy to light and very efficient. A generous supply of dry logs and kindling, fire lighters and paper.
The owners really have put a lot of thought into the fitting out of this cottage and they have supplied so many thoughtful extra touches, the floor lighting on the stairs, the beautiful wooden blinds and many others too numerous to mention.Everything we could possibly need was supplied. Having stayed in numerous holiday lets over 40 years, it really does stand out as one of the best places we have stayed in.When choosing a holiday property we have a check list of our requirements, East Barn ticks all the boxes and more. We booked with the agent over the phone. He was very helpful and efficient. It was good that he knew the property and was able to answer a couple of queries I had.
We received prompt confirmation of the booking and the owner quickly got in touch with location details etc. They were easy to follow and for once we didn’t get lost and found the property very easily. So many owners do not give easy to follow instructions. When I contacted her by phone she was very helpful and friendly, suggesting we could enter the property early on the arrival day and leave later on the leaving day. This was very helpful and much appreciated. We would like to say a very big THANK YOU for giving us the opportunity to stay in this “ gem of a find “.
We have no hesitation in recommending East Barn and hope to return at some time in the future if we have another holiday in Shropshire."
November 2015 "Yes, we enjoyed our stay. It was certainly the highest spec cottage we have ever stayed in. The shower in the second bedroom was an absolute luxury and the bed was the most comfortable I have ever experienced.
If I was going to be very critical, the kitchen would have been improved by having a free standing large upright fridge freezer in the location opposite from the hob, where the shelving display area is. It was a bit awkward having to get on my knees to access the floor level fridge freezer, especially when trying to access items which had got pushed to the back of the fridge.
However I thought overall the cottage was very good value for money. The log fire was so easy to light and the warm air system linked to the chimney was very clever. Along with the under floor heating the cottage would certainly never be cold, even in the depth of winter........... We found the cottage easily, but it might have been slightly difficult if it had been dark."
November 2015 "Yes,we really like the cottage, very well equipped, cozy and comfortable. We would love to come back again. Owner very kind. Thank you."
October 2015 "We were very pleased with our stay at East Barn and it was an excellent cottage to spend a restful week in Shropshire. The cottage was very well equipped and the furnishings were extremely comfortable.
There has obviously been a lot of very hard work put in to creating East Barn and we count ourselves lucky that we were able to stay there. We will stay there again and have already recommended it to our friends."
September 2015 "We were more than impressed with East barn. It was the best holiday cottage we have ever been in and we have been renting holiday cottages for 10 years. Everything was of a high specification and the welcome pack was wonderful. . We will definitely go back there , still lots of places to explore."
August 2015 "I can honestly say this was a fantastic cottage. The quality of the fixtures and fittings were second to none the cottage itself has been renovated to an exceptional standard. It is an excellent base for exploring with both Ludlow and Leominster being easily accessible.
We have excellent communication with the owners without any interference on their part. I would give this the highest recommendation as possible."

May 2015 "We had a really enjoyable stay at East Barn. The cottage was in pristine condition, beautifully decorated and well equipped. There were comprehensive instructions on all the gadgets around the place with a range of local maps and suggestions for walks etc We felt welcomed with warm e mails from the owners and it was great to see the goodies on arrival with wine bread and milk etc....all good. Sweety jar too! Lovely lounge, easy to use log burner and nice TV package were well appreciated. We had a bedding problem on arrival that was swiftly resolved by the owners which was impressive.".............. "This was a high quality rental and I would recommend it without hesitation."
March 2015 "Our short break at East Barn was perfect from start to finish. The owners have worked hard to provide an extremely comfortable holiday home giving attention to every last detail, enabling us to enjoy every minute of our stay. It's the 'added extras' like the wine, jar of sweets, cookies etc which compliment the quality of the basics that sets this place apart from the rest, but shhhh- don't tell too many people, as we want to go back soon! Well done."
February 2015 "We can't speak highly enough of East Barn, it is a beautiful property in a wonderful location The attention to detail and special extras provided by the owners made it feel a real home from home. I would and have recommend this property, and will be rebooking soon."
January 2015 "We had a lovely time at East Barn. The cottage was really cosy, warm, really well equipped. There were some great local walks and the cottage was in good proximity by car to Ludlow.
