The Area Around Hopton
Hopton is in a converted barn, containing three holiday lets, Hopton, Sewdley and one other in the middle. The cottages have access to a private garden at the rear with individual seating areas as well as a 10 acre paddock with a river meandering through the middle, so plenty of space to explore. A barbecue is available on request. Situated between three woods Hopton, Radnor and Sewdley it is a great place for keen walkers or cyclists.
South Shropshire is a special area that has yet to be discovered by popular tourism. Over the years the countryside in this area and the villages and settlements have remained relatively unchanged. Great walks are a major feature of this area and there are many that can be taken directly from the cottage leaving the car behind. Further afield are Offa's Dyke , the Shropshire Way, the Jack Mytton Way, the Kerry Ridgeway and the Long Mynd. Cycle Hire is available locally and there are interesting Cycle Routes in the area.
Storage is available at the cottage, if you hire bikes or bring them with you. Historical sites worth visiting are in Clun, Ludlow Castle , Stokesay Castle and Powys Castle . The NGS have lots of open gardens in this area including those at Powys Castle and Hergest Croft.
The towns of Clun , Bishop's Castle and Ludlow all have a selection of pubs, restaurants and cafes. Visit our Events Calendar, Attractions, Things to do for free and Where to Eat pages for more ideas.
July 2016 We really enjoyed our stay – this is a lovely area which we had not explored before. Hopton was very comfortable, very quiet and very well equipped. The owners were friendly and quick to respond when the wifi was not working.
May 2016 "We found Hopton very comfortable and roomy for a cottage for just 2 people, for example the dining table had 4 chairs and there were 3 easy chairs and a settee in the living room. Unusually, for let for 2, it had both an upstairs bathroom and a downstairs shower room........We liked watching all the bird life around the farm, with nesting swallows and regular visits from a fly catcher.
The location of the cottage was excellent; in a particularly attractive part of Shropshire and even over a Bank Holiday weekend the area was quiet. The cottage had a good selection of walking material and we especially liked and used a local guide book, written by members of 3 local walking groups........."
April 2016 "We had a great time in Hopton. The cottage was very comfortable, clean and warm and the location is stunning. We saw the owners a few times and they were very friendly and it was great to have fresh eggs from their hens....."
May 2015 "Lovely cottage. Clean. Lovely peace and quiet. Very welcoming owners. No complaints."
March 2015 "Yes thank you we really had a great holiday. We loved the cottage, it was very warm and homely and we were really impressed with the surrounding countryside and view's. Also Andrew was always very helpful and friendly. We certainly hope to come again."
July 2014 "Our fifth visit. Love the location. The owner is very friendly and accommodating. Fresh eggs on arrival appreciated.Hopton is a nice cottage with fabulous sized bedroom and very comfortable bed. Kitchen is well stocked with utensils...All very clean, which having stayed in many cottages, is rarely the case. Will definitely be back."
June 2014 "We were impressed with the comfort and quality of the cottage which we thought was very good value for money. The owner was very helpful. It was very useful to have a place to store our bikes."
Sept 2012 " We were very pleasantly surprised by the cottage. Pictures in brochure led us to believe it was little more than a shed, but it was very well appointed and comfortable. We had booked last minute because we had been let down over a house move and needed somewhere to tide us through until we could complete on the purchase. Hopton was ideal. The owner, Andrew, was very pleasant and helpful. Once the new washing machine and drier have been installed, we think this would be a great place to spend a holiday- beautiful countryside, great walks and the Crown at Clunton serves good beer and excellent value food!"
Oct 2011 "I have one serious complaint about my stay at Hopton: It wasn't long enough! From booking to departure, this is one of the best holiday experiences that I have had. I did not expect to find such perfect accommodation for myself and two lively collies at such short notice. I wanted a peaceful break, in the Clun valley, and that is precisely what I got. The accommodation was practical and very comfortable, offering everything that I needed and more. The owner is a lovely person and could not have been more friendly and helpful. The location is perfect, with plenty of space to run the dogs and beautiful walks from the doorstep.
The wonderful village of Clun is within walking distance, or a short drive, and offers all the amenities I needed. I stopped in Ludlow on the way and picked up some lovely local produce. The whole area is beautiful and one that I intend to return to for further exploration. I have every intention of returning to Hopton as soon as I can. Many thanks for finding it for me. "
Sept 2011 "It was excellent The instructions on finding the cottage were better than the SATNAV the welcome from the owner, the facilities and the location were all excellent".
Hopton is in a good location to explore South Shropshire, Herefordshire and Wales. There are several market towns a short drive away all with historic interest: Shrewsbury , Ludlow, Leominster and Hereford. There is a photo gallery for Hay on Wye. Other towns of interest are Clun and Bishop’s Castle with its local Brewery The Three Tuns, perfect for Real Ale lovers.
