Vine Cottage

Close to the River Wye and in the heart of walking country, Vine Cottage is a comfortable ground floor studio apartment, fitted out to modern standards. Centrally located it is a short drive to Ross on Wye to the south with Hereford being 15 minutes to the north. Eastnor Castle , Goodrich Castle , Dore Abbey and How Caple Court Gardens are all very close by.  There are lots of other things to see and do within the vicinity.  For more detailed information visit our Events Calendar and Local Attractions pages.  You can also find out about eating out in the local area on the Where to Eat page.

Ross on Wye is the nearest market town to the cottage and has a wide variety of shops.  Hereford is the County town with a much larger shopping centre and is home to the medieval map of the world - The Mappa Mundi.  An area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), The Wye Valley is worth exploring whether you are driving or walking and is a good day out.  Herefordshire has a huge number of footpaths (around 1830 miles), bridleways (245 miles) and byways (14 miles).  Walkers of all capabilities can be catered for from short, gentle walks or long-distance trails like the Wye Valley Walk, Offa’s Dyke Path or the Mortimer Trail. The scenery is quite different depending on the direction you go, in the west is the dramatic landscape of the Black Mountains, in the east the glorious Malvern Hills, the choice is yours.

Conveniently situated a third of the way along the Wye Valley Walk, Vine Cottage offers first class accommodation at affordable prices.

The owners live next door to Vine Cottage and are more than happy to provide information on local walks that start from the doorstep and which take in one of the excellent hostelries along the way.  They also offer drying facilities should you need them!

Historical sites can be found in all of the surrounding towns,  many castles and churches are dotted around this part of the English/Welsh border area.  Many other local attractions and activities can be found in the surrounding area such as canoeing, white water rafting and the more sedate Butterfly Zoo .

Description

The cottage accommodation is a ground floor studio apartment for 2, fitted out to modern standards throughout. It offers an open plan room with a dining and seating area and double bed. There is a separate shower room, a kitchenette and a walk-in wardrobe. During your stay, please feel free to enjoy the garden.  There are some secluded little spots where you can just relax, unwind, read a book or just enjoy the birdsong.

Caring for the environment, the countryside and rural welfare is important, so the owners do their best to minimise their carbon footprint by, for example, using energy saving light bulbs, composting, recycling and using only environmentally and ecologically sound cleaning products.  The garden has been created with wildlife in mind.

Vine Cottage has an interesting history, when the owners were in the process of refurbishing eviddence was discovered that the cottage was once used as a cider mill.  The original millstone was moved from Vine Cottage to the local pub, The Cottage of Content, in Carey, just up the road, where it still stands outside.

The cottage is within easy reach of 3 local pubs, The New Harp Inn is just across the road, and The Cottage of Content and the Lough Pool Inn are within two miles. All three pubs serve great food and drink.

Access by road is easy and there is dedicated parking adjacent to the cottage

May 2011

"We had a lovely holiday thank you. Vine cottage was very nice, well equipped and in a central location to a lot of places of interest. The owner was very helpful and showed us around the cottage, she also said we were welcome to ask her advice on local places to visit. We would definitely consider staying there again."
