It is a pleasure to be able to stay close to the heart of famous Ludlow town in a hidden and Romantic place. There are excellent restaurants close by, including 2 Michelin Star Restaurants Mr Underhill and La Becasse, but if you want to cook, high quality local produce and a great deli on the square are just the job! This cottage is an excellent base for local exploration. Border country destinations in Herefordshire, Shropshire and Powys are all within easy driving distance.
Ludlow itself has a wide variety of independant shops from butchers to clothes, artisan crafts and high quality food. Ludlow has a huge number of half timbered houses from the medieval period as well as beautiful and elegant georgian fronted buildings making it a very pretty place indeed to wander around and browse. The Castle is open most days and has an interesting history, during the Ludlow Festival there are plays put on at the castle, always Shakespeare, thoroughly enjoyable.
Ludlow renowned for its historic significance, once the capital of Wales, still has the Castle at its centre, a short walk away from the cottage. The town features many medieval buildings which were up-dated in the fasionable way with the addition of Georgian frontages. In its time, it held many of the customary activities that mirrored the London social scene including a 'The Season'. Dances were called 'routes' or 'roughts'. The first performance of Milton's Comus was held in Ludlow and it was bombarded by Cromwellian forces during the English Civil War. St Lawrence Church, well worth a visit, has some 15th century ribald carvings as well as remarkable surviving large medieval stained glass windows. It is considered one of the finest of its type in the country.
The South Shropshire Hills is one of the most beautiful areas of the country with some wonderful places to walk or visit. The borders offer choices such as a trip to Hay on Wye, the place for books but well worth a visit in its own right; or you can walk a short part of Offa's Dyke. Locally, of course, Ludlow has food that equals the best in the UK. Some of the farm shops in N Herfordshire and S Shropshire stock produce of a quality that is virtually unknown in urban areas of the UK.
Further South is Hereford Cathedral and its famous medieval map of the world, The Mappa Mundi. Closer is Leominster, a town still with many local shops that you no longer see in most of the rest of the country. You can also browse its antique shops or visit the Grange or The Priory. The Black and White villages including Weobley with a good pub food are to the South East of Ludlow.
Ludlow is associated with excellent food and cultural events in May and September. A major festival is held in mid Summer with many events including plays by Shakespeare. They are held within the ancient fortified walls next to one of the very few suviving remains of the round Knights Templar Churches at the castle. The Ludlow Assembly Rooms has a busy events calendar including films, recitals and plays. Take a look at our Events Calendar for more details.

Description
Mews Cottage is a little gem hidden away down a small walkway close to the centre of Medieval Ludlow. Adjoining is a beautifully private enclosed garden suitable for al fresco dining or simply drinks on hot days, completely secluded but close to the centre of the town. There is a shed (lockable) in the garden which is available for storage of bikes and also contains the barbecue and various cushions for the garden furniture if you wish to bring them or hire them locally. To the front is a lovely seating area which is paved and catches the morning sun. A small herb garden and scented shrubs add to ambience as a perfect place for morning coffee or tea and a read of the papers.
On entering the cottage you come into a light and bright open plan sitting room with the staircase to the left and the kitchen/dining to the rear of the sitting room. The kitchen is fully kitted out with all the utensils a cook would need, a great deal of thought and care have been put into the equipment, so that should you wish to cook everything is to hand. Of course if you prefer to eat out or have takeaway there are plenty to choose from minutes walk from the cottage. The staircase takes you up to the landing off which is the generous double bedroom, which is light and bright and bathroom. The high quality bathroom has a powerful shower over the bath.

"Mews Cottage was everything it was said to be. We were very comfortable, and the central location made it an ideal base. We took full advantage of Ludlow's eating possibilities and I quickly took to the Ludlow Brewing Company's Gold ale! We'll recommend the place to our friends."
